Saint Melangell Pendant – Protector of Hares and Innocent Necklace
Saint Melangell was a 7th-century Welsh saint known for her compassion, protection of the innocent, and deep connection to nature. According to tradition, she was of Irish origin and renounced worldly life to live as a hermit in the remote valley of Pennant Melangell in Powys, Wales.
Her most famous legend tells of a hunted hare that fled from Prince Brochwel’s hounds and sought refuge beneath her cloak. Melangell sheltered the animal, and when the dogs refused to attack, the prince recognized her sanctity. He granted her the land, declared it a place of sanctuary, and forbade harm to any creature within it. Because of this story, Saint Melangell became especially known as the patron and protector of hares and defenseless animals.
In art and iconography, she is often depicted holding a hare, carrying a shepherd’s crook, or standing calmly amid forests and hills near a small church or chapel. Her story symbolizes mercy, peaceful resistance to violence, and harmony between humanity and the natural world. The site at Pennant Melangell remains a place of pilgrimage and remembrance, preserving her legacy of compassion and sanctuary.
